Roots Reggae from Buenos Aires, Argentina
Cafre is a noun from the Arabic word Kafir or infidel, which Muslims used to call Africans who did not profess the faith of the prophet Mohamed. As the word crossed the World, over time it arrived in the Spanish speaking Americas as Cafre.
Los Cafres and their music grew out of a Buenos Aires album flea market and, since their first gig in 1987, have spread their roots reggae throughout South America.
In 1994, they joined Jimmy Cliff and the Fabulosos Cadillacs before heading to Chile, and playing extensively along the Atlantic coast.
In April 1995, they opened for Alpha Blondy and The Solar System at the Estadio de Obras, Buenos Aires, playing along side Black Uhuru, Israel Vibration, and Yellowman.
There five albums begin in 1994 with “Frequencia Cafre” and includes the 2002 live double album “Vivo a lo Cafre” – capturing 15 years of touring and playing with musicians at major festivals around Brasil, Chile, Puerto Rico and Mexico.
In 2006, Los Cafres played with Ziggy Marley and Michael Rose in Buenos Aires, which followed “Quién da más?“, one of the best selling albums in Latin America.
