Sweet kinky reggae for your life

Maybe they are extravagant, or not very common, surely? Perverse? Yes, if you mean to break with the usual state of things! Thrown into a panic? Sure! From the first listening, it's not easy to understand how Kinky Beat can include so many explosive musical ingredients.

I first heard Kinky Beat in the Summer of 2003. I had recieved an email announcing a concert by a group created through the fusion members of several very well known groups, including Radio Bemba and Jaleo Real, Trimelón, Afrodisian Band and Radar BCN. In spite of curiosity, I didn’t go. I had thought this was of one of these groups, born during a drinking bout one day and who disappears the following day. But no... While in Jota’s car on the way to Pontevedra with Bueu, came the sound of percussion. Surprize! Kinky already had a CD out! It was the kind of CD that knocks you off your seat despite your safety belt. So this was the famous Kinky? I do not remember many times being so compelled to ask ‘Who are you and where did you come from?’

Kinky Beat was born in the suburbs of Barcelona in May 2003. It was a fusion members of several projects and decided to launch its music on the scene after having recorded several jam sessions. A CD was recorded in a home studio with the participation of Arecio Smith (keyboard), David Bourguignon (vocals), Anouk (vocals), Petete (trombone), Kike Empercutío, Melissa (vocals) and Chucky. The result: hot rhythms on five pieces which made a tour of the world. This same CD won the first CDs contest Radio France International- RadioChango. From the first notes of the first cut, "Maria Maria", this is a party CD. "P without B" (Pirate without Boat) announces Kinky, an aphrodisiac cocktail of sounds and rhythms oscillating between rock steady, reggae, hip hop, rock, ragga, funk, samba, but also jungle to take us along gently to the tropical grounds with an air of freedom then takes some nostalgic intervals with "Oyoyo", for finally finishing in a Jamacian festival with "My Lover".

They must be sensational live! There was this day in August when I was awaiting an week of concerts in September, just to be able to listen to the first five songs of this new group on the Barcelona scene. But you won’t have to wait to much more be able to hear a complete show from Kinky. This group has experience and isn’t seen only on the Barcelona scene. They travel! From autumn there wasn’t a weekend Kinky Beat didn’t play in the Barcelona area. The group is propagating its energy with a mature set list, with a few covers such as the Police’s "So Lonely"and "Revolution Rock'n'Roll" by the Clash thrown in. Made for a party and dancing, they don’t ever lose the rhythm nobody leaves indifferent. They have, in a few short months, toured the Iberian peninsula, occasionally opening for Fermin Muguruza, and toured Italy, France and Holland. Their evolution is constant, they try out new sounds, adds today’s sounds and between two concerts they prepare first album. Should good luck be wished them?

Kinky Family is made up of:
Gerald Casajus: the engine of the group alias the man of a thousand hairstyles.
Donato: Direct from Morocco (this is really true?), on bass.
Willy Fuego: Is it a fly? Is it a plane? It's not Superman, but the super-hero of Badalona! That voice.
Miry Matahari: when you see her in concert, you will understand. She’s the voice of Kinky Beat.
Manel Cabello: formerly of Santa Coloma, the Master of the percussion.
