Figli di Madre Ignota is a band from Milano, Italia. A bunch of people who plays an aggressive mix of balkan music, evil polkas, klezmer made out from nothing, mean swings, breathless tarantellas, all made up with surfy electric guitars and a generous horn section: in two words, SPAGHETTI BALKAN!
It’s music to dance wildly, but with lot of fun! The live show is electric and hilarious, if you can imagine a Balkan brass section playing with a twangy rock combo, you’re close to the atmosphere of their show.

They have recorded and produced a new CD, COMBAT DISCO CASBAH, featuring the artistic direction of Tod Ashley (Firewater, Cop Shoot Cop), mixed by Tamir Muskat (Balkan Beat Box), featuring cameos of Uri Kinrot (Boom Pam) and Tod A. and Tamir Muskat themselves. The new CD will have 13 original material, a cover of the 60es italian hit “La Bambola” by Patti Pravo and a cover of an obscure surf instrumental, turned into a bellydance hit.
COMBAT DISCO CASBAH pushes forward the vision of the band, bouncing between balkan to explicit middle eastern spices, from morricone’s surfing guitars to punkish tarantellas.

The band has toured extensively in Germany and border countries and it’s well known for the breathtaking live shows, for the spontaneous (and sometimes never ending) after shows in the audience or with the local DJ with acoustic instruments, for the unstoppable self irony and italian temper: they really make everybody smile and happy. Band’s highlights are Sziget Festival 2009, Horizonte Festival in Koblenz (with DJ Shantel and Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain), Mundial Festival in Tilburg (Netherlands), Eskisehir Festival in Turkey and Italia Love Wave 2007.

Fez Club”, released worldwide for EastBlok in Oct 2008, contains a cover of the 80es hit single Paradise, from the motion picture with Phoebe Cates, produced by and played with the talented trumpeter Roy Paci (Aretuska, Manu Chao, Radio Bemba, Mau Mau and thousand others), features a collaboration with Circus Contraption, a dark circus from Seattle (WA), with whom they shared the composition, arranging and recording of a whole song, features exploit of Italian acclaimed parody theater company Banda Osiris, and songs that mixes languages (Serbian, English) over the main Italian used by the band.
The videoclip of “Paradise” was on MTV Italy and MTV Turkey.

Figli di Madre Ignota literally means “unknown mother’s son”, and it was the legal definition in Italy of orphans of women who couldn’t or didn’t want to recognize them.
Beyond the obsolete and nowadays not-anymore insult, the band felt the missing roots of the music as played in the 60es, music that was played live for people to dance, like Renato Carosone and Fred Buscaglione, humorous, funny and at the same time cool and exciting.
Starting in the late nineties from the electrification of Italian popular music like tarantella, they found a natural inspiration in the Balkan brass bands and klezmer melodies, and like every good self-declared rootless artist, they picked up the spirit of the dance-or-die and mixed it with a powerful rock combo.
