Music to look at, images to dance with

After a decade sharing journeys, concerts, ideas and activism around world music, six good friends decided to start a project together in which images and music share space equally. Balkatalan Experience, an unusual proposition even now, consists of a combination of discjockeys (dj’s) and videojockeys (vj’s) who have been working, for quite a long time and in different areas, in the world music scene.

Balkatalan Experience shows are presented like a fast paced jam session where the participants are constantly interacting, among them and among the audience, with no real boundaries preventing their movements or their capacity to react to any situation. The objective is to build, in a fluid and natural way, a sound and images set that it is both attractive and contagious for the crowd.
They also work on stage in real time, so each performance is always different from the previous one.

Balkatalan Experience is, finally, a repertoire of songs that supports the histrionic, delirious, surprising always, images with those the vj's play and, at the same time, projections that reinforce the power of the music set selected by the dj’s. In this way the group, through the dynamic rhythm generated by the characteristics of the venue and by the reaction of the crowd, shape a show that mix the beauty of the images and the beat of the music.

The show

On stage Balkatalan Experience proposes a journey that goes and comes from Catalonia to the Balkans, looking for the connections between the different sounds of both territories. It is also the particular vision that is born
of the filming of Albert Sitjes, shotted during his numerous trips to the Balkans, and an approach from the Mediterranean west towards the diverse sounds of the European southeast (from taraf and fanfare to rock or hip hop). And finally it is an homage to the music and the musicians that we have been enjoying for a very long time, our way of giving back a little bit of what has been given to us.

The six good friends

Electric Vj’s is the project of the producers Albert Sitjes and Manel Mateo (Catalonian Local Televisions Network). Specialized in conducting live music video and video-clips, they began to work together as a videojockeys in 2006, preparing visuals for its integration into spectacles of other artists and taking part in dj sets and festivals of various kinds. Their work has been included in the Naumon space of the theatrical group La Fura dels Baus (Barcelona, Spain), the Rio Loco Festival (Toulouse, France) or the Windsurf & Kitesurf World Championship (Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, 2007). They have also conducted workshops in various schools and festivals (eg, Pirineos Sur, Spain).

2 Mini Dj’s is the artistic couple formed by Catalan journalists Miguel Amorós (MondoSonoro, B!ritmos...) and Marc Isern (Avui, ritmes.net, La Banda Elástica, Cáñamo...), who offer guapachosas sessions with a selection of global sounds that invites the audience to move without stop. Their musical curriculum credits that they have made dance the public in different venues of Barcelona and surroundings, prestigious Spanish festivals (Pirineos Sur, Cruïlla de Cultures, Mercat de Música Viva de Vic, WOMAD Canarias...) or supporting bands like Muchachito Bombo Infierno, La Excepción, Kultur Shock, La Kinky Beat or Cheb Balowski, among others.

Doctor Batonga! is the alter ego as a selector of Jordi Urpi, both musical columnist and enthusiast. In its work as a discjockey he has travelled through various festivals and cities (from Yerevan, Armenia, to Essakane, in the Sahara), carrying in his bag the new urban sounds that emerged around the world: Arabic rock, Catalan rumba, Balkan rhythms, Asian underground, Latin hip hop, African funk... And, of course, all the mestizo music that spreads to the planet from Barcelona. In his sets, that someone has defined as of tribal repertoires with electronic accents, you will enjoy music collisions from all over the world.

El Perla, tender appellative with that Juanjo Peña is known, is a recalcitrant melomaniac capable of travelling kilometres and kilometres to enjoy a good concert, is a tireless dancer who hypnotizes the girls with his movements, is a very kind waiter always attentive with his companions and the public... As if it was like a team of basketball, this project cannot be understood of complete form without this personage, turned by his own merits into the best sixth man of the musical scene. And the one who does not have clear the value of this honorific degree, can speak with any good supporter of this sport to know about the importance of this man of more.
